What Grape Variety Is Used To Make Nebbiolo?

Hint, it’s in the name. Nebbiolo is the name of the grape variety used to make this stunning Italian varietal.

The Nebbiolo grape is very picky about where it grows, but has proven to love Australia’s fertile soil and bright growing seasons.

Where is Nebbiolo from?

Originating in northern Italy, this wine is famously made in northern Italy’s Piedmont wine region, in the village of Barolo. When made in Barolo, this wine is called Barolo. So why isn’t it called Barolo when made in Australia? This is because Barolo is a namesake. Like Champagne can only be called Champagne if it is made in Champagne in France, Barolo can only be called Barolo if it is made in the Barolo region of Italy. Wow, that sentence was a mouthful.

So effectively that means that Barolo made outside of the region must be called another name, and in Australia that name is Nebbiolo. Nebbiolo is the grape variety that this bold, powerful and tannic red is made from, so it seems fitting.

What food does Nebbiolo pair with?

Since it has Italian roots, Italian styled foods are best paired with Nebbiolo. Stick to rich, tomatoey and meaty dishes like osso bucco, spaghetti bolognese and napoli sauce. Even pizza!

What colour is Nebbiolo?

Nebbiolo is lightly coloured, yet full bodied with high tannins. It’s light, violet-ruby colour may surprise wine drinkers new to Nebbiolo as it is still full bodied.

As Nebbiolo ages, it begins to change colour. It is no mistake that we chose orange for our Nebbiolo labels and tasting notes (see below). As Nebbiolo ages, it changes colour, adopting a gorgeous rust tinge.
